Meet

Maria Virgínia Barros

Maria Virgínia Barros, a native Portuguese speaker from Portugal, holds a postgraduate degree in specialized translation and CAT tools from the Porto Executive Academy and a degree in Modern Languages and Literature from the University of Porto.

As a professional subtitler, she works on TV content (shows, documentaries, action sports) and creates subtitles for social media, corporate projects, and eLearning platforms for internationally recognized brands.

Her career began in international business development, where she translated documents supporting company expansion. For the past several years, she has focused exclusively on translation, subtitling, and bilateral interpreting, helping clients reach Portuguese-speaking audiences.

She is an associate of SUBTLE (the English subtitling association) and ATAV (the Portuguese Audiovisual Translators Association). Beyond her client work, she mentors newcomers to the profession and leads pro bono training sessions on Subtitle Edit at ATAV.

A passionate poet, she has maintained a blog for nearly two decades where she promotes Portuguese poetry and shares her own work. She sees poetry as an art form that connects naturally with subtitling, both requiring precision, rhythm, and cultural sensitivity.
